Expecting too much?

Do you ever feel as if you're expecting too much from your students?  Because the way I see it, stupidity couldn't be a problem for this many students, could it??  Are the instructions not clear enough?  Are the questions/assignments really that difficult?

What do you do when you feel like this?

Do you ever feel as if you're expecting too much from your students?

I teach a lot of courses that teach skills along with knowledge ---ie: PR, journalism, marketing, advertising.

I tell my students that an 'A' means they are a least marginally employable. So, I use minimal professional standards to judge and grade their work. I don't think that's expecting too much. After all, they'll need to know if they have the appropriate knowledge and skills after they graduate.

The theory type courses are a little trickier and then I may adjust my expectations depending upon what I get from the majority of students.

Along with what the poster above says, it's easier to lower the bar afterward then raise it.
